Over the course of the last week, I watched the biographical film of Ilich Ramírez Sanchez AKA Carlos The Jackal.
Now I’m not talking about the 2 hour condensed version…I’m talking about the 3 dvd, six hour masterpiece
and what a story it is about the world’s one and only political gangster.
it’s all there…
The account spans the years 1973-1994 – or the period that witnessed Sanchez at his most violent and relentless. Narrative touchstones include the the PFLP days, the OPEC raid, even the assassination attempt on the marks and spencers chairman joseph sieff right here in London as well as a torrent of assassinations that Carlos and his cronies planned but didn’t carry out.
Here’s some archive news footage:
I remember my older brothers speaking about him animatedly when The Akh was growing up and some of his escapades were the stuff of legend.
Carlos is currently serving several concurrent life sentences in prison, but he wrote a book recently, titled Revolutionary Islam which would be worth a read, but it’s in French only.
Apart from a few lewd scenes, the movie made for riveting viewing on such an interesting character.
If you have the time, then I’d recommend watching it, certainly beats a lot of the mindless drivel that Hollywood is currently churning out.
