This has not appeared in the western press. The leading Egyptian daily, Al-Masri Al-Yawm reports that a Tunisian officer stated that the former chief-of-staff of the Tunisian Army had orders from the US government to “take control of the situation.”
With news of foreigners leaving in their droves and curfews in place, it looks like a full clampdown is now in place. All leaders of the movement will then be rounded up without any foreign media coverage and the revolution will be put down.

On 17 January 2011, it was reported that a party of Swedish ‘tourists’ was attacked after being caught up in the ongoing violence in Tunisia.
