How a Muslim can avoid “Breaking Bad”

I saw this Jumma Khutbah from Shaykh Suhaib Webb, that related the TV show “Breaking Bad” with the decisions, we Muslims make.

I haven’t wrote my own Jumma Reminder for some time but after hearing this Khutbah, I wanted to share it with you all.

I watched the show Breaking Bad for years, the term itself is a colloquialism popular in the American Southwest referring to when someone has taken a turn off the path of the straight and narrow, when they’ve deviated from what’s right.

What you see with the lead character in this show, Walter White is a man that willingly abandons the light for darkness. It’s a core lesson for many of us – to have īmān and then consciously choose to take another path. Our ultimate fate is the cumulative effect of our decisions and deeds – and even if we don’t see the consequences immediately (as happens in the show), we will eventually.

Shaykh Suhaib Webb articulates the themes very well, the theology of Breaking Bad and how to avoiding becoming Walter White:

1. Understand choices – “Indeed we showed him to the way (of truth)….”

2. There is no moral neutrality – Choices breed consequences for the soul and life. “Every soul will bear its burden.”

3. Test and trials cannot be addressed with narcissism. Walter said, “For once I want a say in this,” but submission. The first leads to calamity, the second leads to futuhaat.

4. Sin and moral decline are a slow burn – don’t underestimate thoughts. Breaking bad took 5 seasons. Al-Ghazzali said, “Zina starts in the mind.” Ibn al-Qayyim said that Satan “Is forebearing; he will wait to catch you when you are weak.”

5. Trust in Allah means through the good and the bad – hardships should not be used as an excuse. “Fear Allah wherever you are.” Wherever you are means you physical, spiritual and mental states must be aware that, “At least you know God see you!”

6. Understand the value of the Hereafter vs. This life. If that is there, Walter will never exist. “Paradise is surrounded by difficulties.”

7. Sins are a slippery slope – once you fall in, it is hard to get out. Walter got better and still sold meth. In the Qu’ran we find the story of people whose boat was rocked by a storm and “supplicated to God in earnest” but, when they were saved, “Ran through the earth in insolence.”

8. Blessings can be curses if they are not met with a renewed commitment to God. Walter’s wealth is a curse as is health and other niam. It is not so much about what, buy who it is used. Even the Qur’an can be a potential threat to a person, “The Qur’an is a proof for you or against you.” Hadith

Moral decline is based on a few things – often intangibles – Fear, Illness, Doubt and Desires. Fight them with knowledge, ihsan, love good friends (Walter was a loner and Jesse needs loves), and understanding the value of the Hereafter.

The following formula plays out in our lives every day: Fear and Fear (of God) or Fear and (love of God) or Fear (of God) and Love of this life happen everyday in our lives. Clean hearts are able to see through that and make choices based on divine teachings and a good support system,

The theology of Breaking bad is a lesson in how a person can lose his moral compass by making a series of choices that are rooted in fear.

On a final note, the fatalism of breaking bad is problematic. Some folks do evil and do not see it in this life. Walter continues to get worse. Some folks do good and don’t see it. The unseen and how a person is addressed in this world is rooted in the divine knowledge. Fatalism is not a means to measure Good or evil. The book and the sunna are!

Oh Muslims, Why are you content with humiliation & subjugation?

Listen carefully to the words of Shaykh Muhammad al-Yaqoubi, as you won’t be hearing these words at your local Masajid today.

Oh brothers, friends, strugglers & heroic brothers!

Where are dignity, honour, pride, defence, heroism & manhood?

We, the people of this religion, the people of honour, how could we be content with humiliation & subjugation?

How could there be such bloodshed & attacks against our women?

Yet we remain silent in our homes saying “I want to save myself, may Allah save my family & I do not care about the rest”

Listen to the words of Allah, in its guidance & warning.

“Oh you who believe! If anyone leaves his religion, Allah will bring better people whom he loves & they love him, people who are humble with the believers strong against the unbelievers, people who struggle in the way of Allah & they do not fear blame, that is the bounty of Allah of which he gives to whoever he wills”

Are you one of these people whom Allah loves and who love Allah?

Are you one of those who, for Allah, do not fear any blame?

Cowardly Islamic Scholars take note…….This is the issue to address during Jumma Khutba

Take 3 minutes, listen & pay heed.

YOU are responsible towards the welfare of every member of this Ummah and if there’s something you can do to lift the shackles of oppression for your brothers and sisters in need and you do nothing, then be assured that Allah Az’Wajjal will hold you accountable for your inaction.

I don’t expect the cowards that front as leaders who will address you during the jummah khutba today or the taxi mafia’s that will make the announcements, to utter a single word telling you the words that the Shaykh above did.

He talked the talk and walked the walk, and paid the ultimate price for it.

Sadly our own village idiot leaders are more interested in having a 3 bed semi and a toyota in the driveway than reminding Muslims of their obligations to lift the ever worsening conditions that afflict this Ummah.

Shame on you.

Oh Muslims, when will you realise Your blood, your properties & your honour are sacred! Jummah reminder & (temporary) farewell from me

“… and surely, you will meet your Lord, and He will ask you about your deeds. Beware! …”

Narrated Abu Bakra:

The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said, “Time has taken its original shape which it had when Allah created the Heavens and the Earth. The year is of twelve months, four of which are sacred, and out of these (four) three are in succession, i.e. Dhul-Qa’da, Dhul-Hijja and Al-Muharram, and the fourth is Rajab which is named after the Mudar tribe, between (the month of) Jumaida (ath-thania) and Sha’ban.”

Then the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم asked, “Which is this month?”

We said, “Allah and His Apostle know better.”

On that the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم kept quiet so long that we thought that he might name it with another name.

Then the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said, “Isn’t it the month of Dhul-Hijja?”

We replied, “Yes.”

Then he صلى الله عليه وسلم said, “Which town is this?”

We replied, “Allah and His Apostle know better.”

On that he kept quiet so long that we thought that he might name it with another name. Then he said, “Isn’t it the town of Mecca?”

We replied, “Yes, ”

Then he said, “Which day is today?”

We replied, “Allah and His Apostle know better.”

He kept quiet so long that we thought that he might name it with another name. Then he said, “Isn’t it the day of An-Nahr (i.e. sacrifice)?”

We replied, “Yes.”

He said, “So your blood, your properties, (The sub-narrator Muhammad said, ‘I think the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم also said: And your honour..) are sacred to one another like the sanctity of this day of yours, in this city of yours, in this month of yours; and surely, you will meet your Lord, and He will ask you about your deeds.

Beware!

Do not become infidels after me, cutting the throats of one another. It is incumbent on those who are present to convey this message (of mine) to those who are absent. May be that some of those to whom it will be conveyed will understand it better than those who have actually heard it.”

(The sub-narrator, Muhammad, on remembering that narration, used to say, “Muhammad spoke the truth!”) He (i.e. Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم) then added twice, “No doubt! Haven’t I conveyed (Allah’s Message) to you?”

The call to Tawheed and stopping oppression are intertwined, the articles of your Islamic faith dictate that you muster all your energies into ensuring the oppressor desists and that the oppressed have their justice.

You are commanded to defend these at all times, do not let anyone, be they Muslim or otherwise, tell you any differently.

Insh’Allah I’ll see you back here sometime in the month of Dhū al-Ḥijja.

Today marks the day of the Battle of Badr – Will we ever learn from our history? (PowerPoint Presentation)

Today is the 17th of Ramadan – a day which marks the anniversary of the Battle of Badr. I’ve taken the liberty of uploading a powerpoint which I delivered a few years ago, to accompany the write up.

The Battle of Badr was fought on the 17 Ramadan 2AH, or March 17 624 CE, and was fought some 80 miles southwest of Medina in modern day Arabia.

This was a key battle in the early days of Islam and proved to be a turning point in Islam’s struggle with its oppressive opponents, amongst them the Quraysh in Makkah. I have also covered the Battle of Badr in my “Understanding The Quran” series – Qur’an Juz’ 9 – Al A’raf 88 – Al Anfal 40

Prophet Muhammed Salla’Al-lahu Alayhi Wa Sallam (Arabic salutation “may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him”) led 313 of the Sahaba (the original companions of the Prophet SAW) against a Pagan Makkan army that stood a thousand men strong.

The Muslims were an “army” in name only and it is said that they were in possession of only two horses and seventy camels. They did not have ample provisions, proper camping facilities, good clothing or arms. Most of them were young men with no military experience. The poorly equipped Muslims, enfeebled by the afflictions they had been enduring till then, presented a pitiful contrast to the Makkan army which consisted of a well drilled war machine. The Makkans, led by the house of Quraysh had 700 camels and 200 cavalry (armoured men on horseback) at their disposal. If that wasn’t enough the pagan Makkan army occupied the higher ground and held the upper hand against the Muslims.

Against such formidable odds, Allah granted victory to the Muslims.

Divine Victory

The victory at Badr was achieved with Divine Help from Almighty Allah. It was a joyous and spiritual victory of Haqq (Truth) over Baatil (Falsehood), achieved with Divine intervention. The Glorious Quran speaks about this battle of Truth over Falsehood:

Persecution Due to Their Beliefs

The importance of the Battle of Badr cannot be over-estimated. In the struggle against the Makkan oppressors it was an event after which the early Muslim community felt itself free to make rapid advances.

Some of our detractors will have us believe that it was the Muslims who went on the offensive. To them we state the facts.

The primary cause of the Battle of Badr lay in the determination of the Quraysh and those that opposed Islam, who wished to destroy the Muslim community simply because they believed in one single God. If this was allowed to continue, the Makkans could foresee that the Muslims would pose a serious threat to their established power base and the prestige of the Quraysh, their gods and goddesses would diminish.

These tyrants not only confined themselves to verbal opposition to the Prophet (SAW), but also chastised the Muslims who followed his message. This was further compounded with trade and personal boycotts on the Prophet (SAW) and his family and the Muslims, leading to deplorable living conditions.

The Prophet (SAW) was publicly ridiculed and humiliated, including frequent throwing of filth on him in the street and while he prayed in the Ka’bah, and even had attempts made on his life. In spite of great hardships and no apparent support, the message of Islam kept all Muslims firm in their belief. The Prophet was asked by God to be patient and to preach the message of Qur’an. He advised Muslims to remain patient because he did not receive any revelation yet to retaliate against their persecutors.

When the persecution became unbearable for most Muslims, the Prophet advised them in the fifth year of his mission (615 CE) to emigrate to Abyssinia (modern Ethiopia) where Ashabah (Negus, a Christian) was the ruler. Eighty people, not counting the small children, emigrated in small groups to avoid detection. No sooner had they left the Arabian coastline, the leaders of Quraysh discovered their flight. They decided to not leave these Muslims in peace and immediately sent two of their envoys to Negus to bring all of them back. However, Negus allowed them to stay under his protection after he investigated Muslim belief and heard the revelations about Jesus and Mary (peace be upon them both), which appears in Chapter 19 of the Qur’an (entitled “Mary”). The emigrants were allowed freedom of worship in Abyssinia.

The effects of the three-year boycott left the Prophet with more personal sorrow when he lost his beloved wife Khadijah (Radia Allahu’anha, Arabic salutation, may Allah be pleased with her) and his uncle Abu Talib soon after the ban was lifted.

Right from the inception of the Islamic movement, the Prophet (SAW) and his followers were on the defensive, and they patiently endured all the hardships they faced.

When the Muslims finally migrated enmasse to Madinah, some 280 miles North of Makka, the Prophet (SAW) and Abu-Bakr Al-Siddeeq (Radia Allahu’anhu, Arabic salutation, may Allah be pleased with him) were the last to move.

Even when the Muslims had left their homes, possessions, businesses and livelihoods behind in Makka, the Quraysh and the pagans of Makka would not rest, and soon followed them to Madinah, where they fought the battle of Badr some eighty miles to the Southwest of Madinah.

When you are faced with the over whelming evidence, there is no possible way that anyone can state that it was the Muslims who were on the offensive.

What Lessons Can We Draw Today From This Event?

We have forgotten the lessons that were taught – that we have left behind the Fard (Obligation) of Jihad Fi Sabeel Allah.

The murderous attempts on the life of the Prophet (SAW) were carried out by a coalition. The Muslims were few in number so could never retaliate against all the tribes who had colluded to carry out such a despicable act. Most recently we see the same methods being used with coalition forces launching their illegal invasions and wars against Iraq and Afghanistan.

Looking at the economic and personal boycotts that the Muslims had to suffer, a distinct parallel can be drawn with the plight that the Palestinians currently face. The Palestinians democratically elected a government which for once had the true interests of the Palestinian people above any other. The Palestinian people have had to suffer economic blockades, being cut-off politically from the rest of the world, having their taxation revenue’s frozen and withheld. One can draw a parallel from the collective punishments that are meted out today, to the ones imposed on the Prophet (SAW) and the companions.

History Repeats Itself – Learn From It

You may have noticed a disturbing pattern emerging here. Everything that happens today has happened in centuries gone by. History has repeated itself.

We have abandoned the principle of the Defensive Jihad. We find ourselves attacked on a personal level. Our civil liberties are undermined continually with ever expanding “Anti-terror” legislations. We find ourselves being attacked on an institutional level. Whether it’s our Mosques and the Shaykhs that represent them, our Islamic schools or even bodies such as MPACUK and the MCBs and MABs of this world. Our institutions are incapable of defending themselves, nevermind the Ummah. So is it little wonder we are in the woeful predicament we find ourselves in?

The companions of Prophet Muhammed (SAW) had the privilege to view his conduct in person. They would have observed the way in which he conducted himself, the way he put into practice whatever he taught. The Holy Prophet Muhammed (SAW) was the leader of his house and his people. When the Muslims were commanded to pray, he would pray the most. When mosques were being built, he helped to build them. He didn’t stand back and ask for them to be constructed. There were never any luxuries, lavish palaces or plush residencies for him.

When the Muslims were being persecuted in Makkah, Prophet Muhammed (SAW) kept his composure and stayed amongst the Muslims enduring the same hardship. Whenever the Muslims had to defend themselves in battle he commanded the troops from the front. By comparison it is easy to witness today how many modern leaders act in a contradictory manner to their sayings. Politicians who lie and cheat are commonplace as are leaders of countries who engage in unnecessary wars. None of this was evident from the life of the Holy Prophet Muhammed (SAW).

We rightly hold our Prophet (SAW) as a light for us aspire to, as a true role model, but are we guilty of admiring his actions and not daring to walk in his footsteps?

Are we ready to put aside our minor differences and unite under “La ila-ha ill allah Muhammed-ur Rasoolullah” (There is none worthy of worship except Allah and Muhammed is the messenger of Allah).

The truth of the matter is that me must remain steadfast and never lose hope.

We have the power to change the situation. The question is: will we take the opportunity?

The Ulema should be supporting the Uprising’s throughout the Muslim world

For my Jummah Khutbah (Friday reminder) The Akh wishes to share with you the words of Damascus’s Shaykh Muhammed al-Yaqoubi, a righteous scholar who has shown he follows the true principles of Islam by by not siding with the rulers but with the people to show that their should be no fear on the choice of resistance.

The Akh has been very critical of our Ulema and their glowing endorsement for corrupt leaderships the world over – especially for the morally bankrupt house of frauds.

There is no doubt that there is a massive role for the Ulema to play in leading the Ummah, by giving Muslims the correct Islamic direction. Through their silence however, the Muslim people have been left with no other choice but to take to the streets, to demand the rights bestowed upon them by Allah Az’Wajjal and to remove the oppressive conditions that have been constricted them for decades.

While Shaykhs up and down this country have been telling people not to question their leaders, the Islamic rulings on demonstrations and how they are obligatory to remove these heinous conditions are set out with existing Fatawa’s, but they are conveniently overlooked.

National unity is a must, with all groups amongst the people pull in the same direction to demand the lifting of the oppressive conditions and the establishment of justice, so that the country and its people are above all other political considerations and not to be held hostage to the influence of any foreign power (Western foreign policy).

The Ulema have to take a courageous stance, there is no doubt that Muslims are looking at their Islamic leaders for advice like they have never done before, people are waiting on the words of scholars before taking any action. You can see this as most demonstrations start from the Masajid, Shaykh’s have a huge role in shaping public opinion.

Islam and the Prophets (Peace be upon all of them) never wanted us to surrender to injustice;

Hadith

“The best of all martyrs are Hamzah (ibn Abdul-Muttalib) and a man who stood before an unjust leader, commanding him to do right and avoid evil, so the leader killed him.” [al-Haakim]

Then he the Prophet continued: “Nay, by Allah, you either enjoin good and forbid evil and catch hold of the hand of the oppressor and persuade him to act justly and stick to the truth, or, Allah will involve the hearts of some of you with the hearts of others and curse you as he had cursed them” [Abu Dawud and At-Tirmidhi]

Abu Sa’id Al-Khudri (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet (pbuh) said, “The best type of jihad is speaking a true word in the presence of a tyrant ruler” [Abu Dawud and At-Tirmidhi]

Abu Sa’id Al-Khudri (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet (pbuh) said, “Whoever amongst you sees an evil, he must change it with his hand; if he is unable to do so, then with his tongue; and if he is unable to do so, then with his heart; and that is the weakest form of faith” [Muslim]

Abu-Bakr As-Siddiq (RA) said that he heard the Prophet (pbuh) saying “When people see an oppressor but do not prevent him from (doing evil) then it is likely that Allah will punish them all” [Abu Dawud and At-Tirmidhi]

Quran

You are now the best people brought forth for (the guidance and reform of) mankind.You enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong and believe in Allah.[Ale-Imran 110]

…….We rescued those who forbade evil and afflicted the wrong-doers with a grievous chastisement because of their evildoing. [Al-Araf 165]

Allah says to Musa (AS) “And go to Pharaoh now for he has transgressed all bounds. [Taha 24]”

Just as Shaykh Muhammad al-Yaqoubi said months ago:

“Political authority and religion are kin brothers, neither would stand but by its companion; because religion is the foundation of political power and its pillar, and political power is the guardian of religion; political power is not established with a foundation, and religion cannot be implemented without authority.”

Insh’Allah you’ll be off to the Masajid in a few hours, if your Shaykh is not addressing these issues, then ask him politely why?

Until the mimbars in our masajids do not reverberate and the hearts of the believers do not resonate with the power of words like his, the Muslim Ummah will remain oppressed and the Muslim leaders will remain tyrannical.

UPDATE

Saudi Shaykh, Salman Al-`Awdah, was banned from travelling from Saudi Arabia. He was not allowed to attend a conference in Egypt. Apparently, he offended the kingdom when he praised all Arab revolutions and said that not one Arab country would be spared.
